D-Conan: Series Overview
D-Conan, short for Detective Conan, is an anime/manga series created by Gosho Aoyama. There are many manga books, shows, and movies in existence all centered around D-Conan, the character that the series was named after. The main character is originally named Kudou Shinichi, but, once the story's main conflict begins, changes his name to Edogawa Conan to protect his identity.
General Synopsis
The story's main conflict begins when Kudou Shinichi encounters (and is captured by) a gang of crooks. These crooks, part of the Black Organization, force our victim to drink a deadly, experimental substance. He miraculously survives, but his body reverts back to that of a child's. He escapes and a close friend advises that he rename himself D-Conan. Thus he begins his quest to bring his aggressors to justice. In the time being, he stays under cover at Ran's house (an old friend and potential love interest), and then begins his under cover work through Ran's Father's detective agency. He actively solves crimes, picks up leads on the Black Organization, makes friends, and goes through several adventures in spite of his prepubescent reversion.
Love Interest: Detective Conan Ran Mouri
Ran Mouri is D-Conan's old friend and possible lover. She does seem to be in love with Kudou Shinichi, although she appears to be too afraid to admit it. As you can tell from this, she is a bit of a shy and nervous character. However, when she overcomes her fears, she can be headstrong (exemplified by her love of Karate). She is also very patient, kind, caring, happy, and loyal, of which you can see in D-Conan's relation ship with her. Her father, as stated above, is the owner of a detective agency, which Detective Conan uses as a key resource in tracking his aggressors. She is also very intelligent, as she comes close to unmasking D-Conan's true identity multiple times through out the plot.
D-Conan's Front: Kogoro Mouri
D-Conan continues his detective work while young, going so far as to start the Detective Boys: a club in elementary school for those with similar interests. Still, our protagonist knows that no one takes children seriously. In order to get real work done, he lures Kogoro Mouri, Ran's father, to finish the cases. When Kogoro gets in the way, however, D-Conan uses a stun-gun wrist watch to temporarily disable him.
Detective Boys: Ai Haibara
Ai Haibara, a former Black Organization member, invented the experimental poison (APTX 4869) that shrunk D-Conan. Ironically, she is also a victim of the pill. She helps D-Conan while trying to make sense of her complex invention.
Inventor: Hiroshi Agasa
Hiroshi Agasa is D-Conan's neighbor and close friend. He is the first to realize that D-Conan is actually Shinichi and invents a plethora of helpful gadgets, including badges (walkie talkies) for the detective boys and D-Conan's stun-gun wrist watch.
Main Anime Debate: Detective Conan Ran Finds Out?
As mentioned earlier, Ran has suspicions that Detective Conan is, in fact, Kudou Shinichi. These suspicions come from D-Conan's mature tone and style of speech, his cell phone, his snooping about the detective office, as well as many other instances. In fact, Detective Conan almost confessed his true identity to her on one occasion. Still, he decided against it in the end. Since the anime series is still incomplete, we have yet to find out how Ran finds out, or if she ever will. This is currently a well debated topic by the series' many fans: some want Ran to find out on her own, others want D-Conan to confess, and others have a number of differing opinions. It will be interesting to see how it plays out!
